OB - International Women's Day 23’
This year’s International Women’s Day theme — #EmbraceEquity — is a call to work towards true inclusion through the process of equity to reach equality.
As the lead designer in this project, my take was to align OB's secondary palette colors with my personal view on feminism and diversity.
Feminism, as a powerful social and political movement, has reshaped the narrative surrounding women's rights and gender equality. While feminism aims to dismantle patriarchal structures that perpetuate discrimination and oppression, it also recognizes and celebrates the diverse experiences and identities within the broader category of womanhood. Embracing women's diversity within feminism not only acknowledges the unique challenges faced by different groups of women but also fosters unity and strength in the pursuit of gender equality.
Recognizing Women's Intersectionality:
One of the key aspects of embracing women's diversity within feminism is acknowledging the concept of intersectionality. Coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw, intersectionality recognizes that individuals experience multiple forms of oppression and discrimination based on their intersecting identities, such as race, class, sexuality, disability, and more. By understanding the intersectional experiences of women, feminism becomes more inclusive and effective in addressing the unique barriers faced by diverse groups of women.
Embracing Cultural and Ethnic Diversity:
Women's diversity extends beyond intersectionality to encompass cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Feminism recognizes that women from different cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds face distinct challenges and prejudices. Embracing cultural and ethnic diversity within feminism promotes inclusivity and allows for a more nuanced understanding of the experiences of women around the world. It encourages the amplification of diverse voices, stories, and perspectives, empowering women from all backgrounds to take part in shaping their own narratives.
Valuing Different Feminist Perspectives:
Within the feminist movement, various perspectives and approaches exist, reflecting the rich diversity of thought within feminism itself. From liberal feminism to radical feminism, from ecofeminism to queer feminism, each perspective offers a unique lens through which to analyze and challenge gender inequalities. Embracing these diverse feminist perspectives fosters healthy dialogue, encourages critical thinking, and allows for the development of comprehensive strategies to address the multifaceted issues faced by women.
Promoting Inclusivity and Representation:
An essential aspect of embracing women's diversity within feminism is promoting inclusivity and representation. By ensuring that diverse women have a seat at the table, feminism can advocate for policies and initiatives that address their specific needs and concerns. It is crucial to create platforms that amplify the voices of marginalized women and provide opportunities for their leadership. This inclusivity helps break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create a more equitable society for all.
Conclusion: Feminism is not a one-size-fits-all movement; it is a tapestry of diverse perspectives, experiences, and identities. Embracing women's diversity within feminism is essential to create an inclusive movement that empowers all women. By recognizing and valuing intersectional experiences, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and diverse feminist perspectives, we can forge a path toward true gender equality. Together, we can celebrate the strength in our unity and build a world where all women are seen, heard, and afforded equal opportunities.
